Greetings,
Scott Teeters here and welcome to the October issue of The Illustrated Corvette Series Newsletter.

The number of warm days are dwindling here in New Jersey as we rapidly move into our big leaf evacuation. We have leaves everywhere on the ground and the trees are still about 95% still full. In two weeks nearly everything will be bare except for the pines.

I'm very good at keeping very busy and this month has been no exception. I started a new series of framed prints that we're calling, "The Illustrated Corvette Series III" These are REALLY classy looking.

I also started a new eBay store just for Corvette folks.
"Corvette Gear"has a large selection of GM licensed Corvette apparel and I'm now offering the new framed print series in the eBay store as well. Later I'll be adding the Corvette Emblems in Steel line, much more apparel, as well as a few other things I'm working on.

And finally, since the last newsletter I finished the ICS No. 128 Illustrated Corvette Series column featuring the original Z06 from 1963. The more I researched this car and spent time drawing it, the more impressed I was with Duntov's stealth ability to get good hardware in the capable hands of racers, while keeping a low profile. This is arguably the most over looked Corvette ever made.

So, with a lot to share with you, here are the highlights. Scroll down to the next block for the first micro-article.

-
"The Original Z06" - A look back at the 1963 Z06 racing package for the new Sting Ray. This was a VERY expensive package in its day. Unlike the modern Z06 Corvettes, this was a "not for street use" package.

The Latest Illustrated Corvette Series: ICS No. 128
1963 Z06 Corvette Sting Ray "The Original Z06"

ICS No. 128 63 Z06It's too bad that a well-financed racer, such as Briggs Cunningham, didn't get behind the '63 Z06 Corvette. Although the car had a default win at its first race in October '62 in Los Angeles that astonished Mickey Thompson, this was the beginning of some lean times for Corvette racers. The new Sting Ray, with its independent rear suspension, was supposed to give an advantage to Corvette racers (it was a definite improvement). Unfortunately, the Sting Ray spent the next few years chasing Shelby Cobras. The rules were a wee bit odd and allowed Vettes and Cobras to race in the same class. Yet the Cobra was 1,000 pounds lighter than the Corvette.

With only 199 officially produced, the '63 Z06 is one of the rarer Corvettes. Because the car had no external markings and was powered by a "regular" L84 Fuel Injected 327, it never developed a mystique like the L-88 Vettes. With lots of reliable power on tap, the Z06 enhancements were all in the suspension, brakes, fuel tank, and special rear inner wheel wells for wider tires. A Z06 equipped Sting Ray was a rather unpleasant ride on the street. It was extremely hard riding, noisy inside, and the the brakes had to be HOT in order to function. The sales brochure said, "Off Road," and they meant it.

Introducing, our NEWEST print series...
The Illustrated Corvette Series III

Limited Edition of just 250 prints. Each signed and numbered by the artist and framed in a 14-3/8" x 11-3/8" gold-chrome aluminum frame.

ICS III Sample 1An excellent gift for that hard to buy for Corvette person in your life. All framed up and ready for hanging! We even include a nail!

I originally wanted to do a new print series that would be cool and unusual. I was working on getting the prints made on brushed aluminum sheet metal. Unfortunately, the logistics of the deal was proving to be a headache. So I poured a few more cups of coffee and put on my thinking cap. Then all of a sudden, POOF! There it was in my mind's eye, just as shown here.

The Illustrated Corvette Series III uses the profile art from my monthly column in "Vette Magazine." Each print measures 8-1/2" x 11" and is printed on thick, 12-point gloss paper. Then, I sign and number each print. I only plan to make 250 prints of each layout.

The gold-chrome aluminum frames measure 11-3/8" x 14-3/8" and are 3/4" thick. The front surface of the frame has a polished finish and the edges are brush finished. The 11" x 14" blue mat has a 9-1/2" x 7-1/2" opening and the glazing is glass.

ICS III Sample 2All of our framed prints are wrapped in "large-bubble" bubble wrap. The wrapped, framed print is then securely taped to the inside of the shipping box. The corrugated cardboard box is securely taped and stamped,
"FRAGILE DO NOT BEND."  All of our packages are sent via USPS Priority Mail-10.00. We also ship world-wide-rates are based on your location.
For shipping rates to Canada and International, just E-mail us for a shipping quote.

As of this newletter mailing, I have  completed 14 Illustrated Corvette Series III prints, ranging from the 1957 Fule-Injected 283 to the 2006-2007 Z06. My objective is to have available before the end of November, Illustrated Corvette Series III framed prints of every production Corvette from 1953 to 2007!

After you receive your framed print, all you have to do is wrap it, and give  it with Season's Greetings.

Scott Teeters' New, "Old" Articles

Article Fall 1977 Grand SportThis month we're going back 30 years (YIKES!!!) to the Fall 1977 issue of "Vette Quarterly" for a look back at my illustrated feature article covering the 1963 Grand Sport.

Back then, there really wasn't much information about the Grand Sport. Karl Ludvigsen's book, "Corvette - America's Star-Spangled Sports Car" and a few articles were all that was available for background reference.

After reading everything I could find, I thought it would be a good thing to talk with someone that actually raced one of the five Grand Sports. The closest person I could contact was Roger Penske. So I called him!

Mr. Penske wasn't in the office and the nice secretary told me that she would leave a message for him to return my call. "Right!" I thought. Then, about two weeks later, my phone rang and the voice on the other end said, "This is Roger Penske, how can I help you?" Yea, it was Him!

We talked for about 10-minutes and explained that after the car was no longer competitive, he sold his coupe to George Winterstein. George raced the car for a time and sold it. Then the car was bought and sold several times and for a while was "lost." No one knew of the car's whereabouts. Eventually, the car surfaced, as did all of the Grand Sports. By the '90s all five had been restored and have been seen together several times for special Corvette events taunting the Cobras.

The cars of our youth are often the most dear to us. I fell in love with Corvettes in 1964, so I have an affection for the Sting Ray cars. Duntov's Grand Sports were the ultimate "could have been" Corvette racers. Had GM allowed Duntov to mass produce Grand Sports in limited numbers, the whole "Corvette vs Cobra" rivalry would have been a very different story.

Let's Play, "Corvette Oddball!"
Quirky Vette Factoids
Astro I-1

Question: Did Chevrolet ever seriously consider a "Corvair-powered" Corvette?

Answer:
I don't know how "serious" they were, but they did build a show car prototype. This was probably a market research vehicle. I covered this unusual engineering study car in The Illustrated Corvette Series as installment No. 35. Most of the Corvette show cars and prototypes were very small cars. This one may or may not have been the smallest, but was definitely the shortest. The car was 35.5-inches tall, or short, depending on your perspective. This was achievable because of the flat, opposed 6-cylinder Corvair engine that produced 240-horsepower from its 176 cubic-inches. That's 1.4-horsepower per cubic-inch. Not too shabby!

Corvette Astro I -4Here's where you can REALLY see how tiny the car was. Obviously not street worthy, the Astro I must have been a trip to drive and ride in.

Here's the story...

Almost from the beginning, there have been those at Chevrolet who wanted the Corvette to be "something else." Along the way there have been proposals to soften the Corvette, add a back seat, and to use steel for the body. The Astro I (one) proposed using an opposed, flat-six, Corvair engine. Fortunately, this was one for the history books.

The official purpose of the Astro I was to study aerodynamics and new features. Engineers had long known that frontal area and shape were major factors in how slippery a car is in high-speed air. Much of what we take for granted in aerodynamics was new territory in the mid '60s. For this study, function followed form.

To keep the front profile as low as possible, a modified, flat, opposed-six Corvair engine was placed behind the rear wheels. Although a far cry from the rip-snort'n 427s of the day, the little 176 cubic-inch engine was made of alloy aluminum with steel cylinder sleeves and featured single overhead cams, hemi heads, Weber carburetors, and made 240 horsepower. That's 1.4 hp per cubic inch!

The unibody construction had large boxed side sill members that added stiffness and it housed a fuel cell on the passenger side. The bulkhead behind the driver and the forged aluminum windshield header provided rollover protection.

The front and rear suspension used double wishbones and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheels and tires hadn't gotten fat yet, so 5.5 inch and 7.0 inch wheels were used front and back.

Note the absence of any normal door lines. The entire canopy hinged up from a pivot point behind the rear wheels. Since the car was 35.5 inches tall, 12.3 inches shorter than a '68 Corvette, the seats were fixed to the canopy and actually raised up so that you could step into the interior. This was not a rainy day car.

The Astro I had many styling tricks that were standard for GM study cars; a closet at the base of the windshield for wipers, pop-up spoiler brake lights, access panels on the hood for servicing fluids, and periscope rear view mirrors. The interior had the gauges, warning lights, and twin-grip steering control device. Trick stuff in 1967.

At only 35.5 inches tall, the Astro I was as low as a Countach, 15 years earlier. Too bad it wasn't packing a 427. Oh well.

Hot From the Rumor Mill:
Closing in on the 2009 "ZR1"?
2009_ZR1_Spy-Shot_11-07

Rust never sleeps and neither does the Corvette Rumor Mill

When the sky shots are this clear, it's pretty much a done deal. But, one never knows for sure. Actually, I have it from a very good source that this car will be on the 2009 Corvette order form.

My source confirmed my guess from last month that indeed, the hood and roof section is carbon fiber. Obviously, lowering the center of gravity is the mission here. By reducing the weight in the top of the car the CG goes down.

I'm certain that the silly pattern on the hood and the black fender sides is just disguise. However, if you take note of the black line running up the center of the hood, we're seeing a pronounced bluge.

It must be covering something tall under there, or it wouldn't be there.

So, here's what's obvious:

* Z06 platform
* Carbon fiber hood & roof section
* A short, full-width rear spoiler
* C6.R-style wheels and tires
* Something BIG under the hood.
    A turbocharger?
    A supercharger?  <-- Probably.

As far as actual engine details are concerned, those that really know aren't saying. Those that are saying, are guesstimating based on what's known about the basic Z07 LS7 engine, the C6.R racing engines, and what's possible in between.

This is PURE SPECULATION on my part, but I would not be surprised to see the completed "ZR1" at the North American Auto Show, January 13 to 27, 2008. You can check out more images of the above car

Suggestions Anyone???

Since The Illustrated Corvette Series started in the Spring of '97, it has been telling the chronological history of the Corvette. Beginning this September, the series will be covering interesting famous racing Vettes, specialty Vettes, and some of the more obscure prototype and show Vettes, such as the '63 4-seater Sting Ray prototype and the 1954 Nomad.

This should be a lot of fun, as there's always a good story behind race cars, prototypes, and show cars.

So, if you have a suggestion for something that you'd like to see in the series, please e-mail me at:

lightoak@comcast.net. I'm open to all suggestions.
