The Latest Illustrated Corvette Series: ICS No. 131 '67 - '69 L-88 Corvette Racers "Bringing Back Racing Respect"
Series No. 130 covered the drag racing performance potential of the L-88 Corvette with the heartwarming story of Charlie "Astoria Chas" Snyder and his Motion Performance-prepared L-88 '67 Corvette Roadster. This month we take a look at the road racing application of the '67 to '69 L-88 Corvettes.
The three L-88 racers highlighted are the '67 Sunray DX L-88 Coupe, actor James Garner's '68 A.I.R. L-88 Roadster, and the '69 Owens-Corning Fiberglass L-88 Roadster. The '67 Sunray DX hit 194-mph at Daytona. The Garner A.I.R. car was only raced once with the team. And the Owens-Corning car racked up 22 straight class wins.
Those big, booming L-88s made for some heady times.
The article will appear in the May 2008 issue of Vette magazine on the very last page.
You can order the ICS No. 131 parchment paper print directly from The Illustrated Corvette Series website and simply use the PayPal payment buttons for payment.
Or you can order with a credit card by calling us TOLL-FREE at: 1-800-858-6670.
You can also read the complete story at the link above.
The Astoria-Chas Corvette is on the same web page.
There are two versions of this month's series installment. Below is the alternate layout.

Both versions are available HERE.
All
of our prints measure 11" x 17", are printed on tan parchment paper,
are signed by the artist and cost $19.95, + $4.95 S&H. For an additional $10 you can have any of our prints personalized! An excellent gift for that hard to buy for Corvette person in your life.

Vette Videos Classic sights & sounds of Chevy's Plastic Fantastic!
Welcome to our growing collection of YouTube and GoogleVideo
links to some interesting Corvette videos. I have four new ones to share
this month.
LS2 Corvette Engine Assembly Animation
I was looking for images of the new supercharged LS9 engine used in the '09 ZR1 when I found this little gem of an animation. It is a technical animation that shows the assembly of all of the major components of the '05 - '07 LS2 Corvette engine. Very cool!

Corvette Commercials Through the Years
The first commercial is from 1963. Check out the surprised lovely lady when the Sting Ray "winks" at her. Very cute.
To enjoy this Vette Video, CLICK HERE.
The second commercial is from 1965. The TV family western "BONANZA" was a huge hit on Sunday nights. NBC splashed the fact that the show was "In Living Color." In the beginning of the ad, they used the first few measures of the BONANZA them song. Actor Pernell Roberts played the brooding, thoughtful Adam Cartwright. Roberts drives a '65 Roadster onto the set of Bonanza, gets out, and tells you "Find out why they call it, Sting Ray."
To enjoy this Vette Video, CLICK HERE.
The third commercial is from 2005 and it titled, "A Boy's Dream." There's no talking until the very end. The background music features Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones playing, "Jump'n Jack Flash" while kid and teachers are slack-jawed as the new C6 Corvette flies through the air, burns rubber, and does 4-wheel drifts with a 10-year old boy behind the wheel. Then the announcer says, "The all-new Corvette. The official car of your dreams." It's all a day dream of a boy holding his skate board and gawking at a new, red C6 Corvette.
It's a "gas, gas, gas."

Let's Play, "Corvette Oddball!" Quirky Vette Factoids Question: Do you really need a body for your Corvette?
Answer: Not really, but it's nice to have one.
This car was featured in Vette Magazine a few years ago. It's just too quirky to not share. The car is a fully functional '67 big-block Corvette... with no body - just the fully running chassis. It must be a BLAST to drive!
The Driveable Chassis '67 big-block Corvette is the work of Corvette Repair in Valley Stream, New York. Owner Kevin Mackay and his crew specialize in body-off Corvette restorations and have done restoration work on Chip Miller's 1960 Le Mans and Purple People Eater racer, the first L-88 '66 Sting Ray (the Roger Penske Chevrolet car), the '69 Rebel #57 L-88 racer, and many others.

Kevin has built four driveable chassis/cut-away cars. The drivable chassis 67 big-block (shown above) 'was built in '90 and is the first of first of Kevin's unique Corvette collection.
The crowd response from car shows was so overwhelming that in '92 Kevin built his suspended body 66 big-block Coupe. This is a beautiful demonstration piece that shows the inner working of a body-off restoration.
On somewhat of a roll, Kevin then built the cut-away Sunray DX Racer. No, he didn't actually cut up the original Sunray DX car, the body is a donor, but the engine is a for-real L-88 and everything else is race track ready.
Ten years went by before Kevin unveiled his latest creation, the fully-functional and New York street legal, see-thru '69 L-88 Corvette. Everything works on this car and it passes inspection. I would have LOVED being at the inspection station the day Kevin took the see-through L-88 for inspection!
All of the Corvette Repair, Inc. cars are beautifully detailed and have won many awards. I consider these cars as educational, functional display pieces of automotive history.
Only a few people have actually experienced the sound of fury from behind the steering wheel of a big-block Corvette with side-mounted exhaust and no body to buffer the noise. WOW!
You might have to think about that for a while.
Take notice that the driveable '67 Chassis car has no passenger seat. That's so that no one dies from fright!
You can see more of Kevin Mackay's work at... http://corvetterepair.com/index.htm
Kevin, if you sold rides at the car shows, the lines would be HUGE!

Zip me off an e-mail at, lightoak@comcast.net and I'll include it in a future newsletter.

Hot From the Rumor Mill: The Return of the Chaparral 2E

Surprisingly, Jim Hall's Chaparral 2E only raced in five events and had one victory. But what put the 2E firmly in the racing history was the functional display that by managing airflow, additional down force can be used to a race car's advantage. Racing development was running so fast in the '60s that in no time, the 2E was replaced with the more advanced, winged Chaparral 2F.
Most road racing followers knew that Jim Hall was getting back door help from Chevrolet, but no one was really sure "how much" assistance he was getting. Hall was a pretty quiet guy. This is another example of GM's "we don't race" policy of the '60s. It's too bad that Hall didn't get full support and then take on the Ford GT40 cars.
In '05 Ford announced that they were going to build brand new GT40 cars that would be completely based on the original race car design, and only updated wherever necessary. If it's good enough for the famous old Ford racer, why not the Chaparral?
And the perfect team to pull it off would be the originator of the Chaparral cars - Jim Hall of Chaparral Cars, in Midland, Texas. Hall still has the original fiberglass molds. How cool is that?
WindingRoad.com, the online magazine, ran the story and you can read it HERE.
Be sure to check out this Chaparral Video HERE.

Two NEW Corvette "Tribute" Prints ZR1 Tribute & The Grand Sport Tribute
ZR1 Tribute
There's no doubt that the '09 ZR1 will keep Corvette fans talking for YEARS. If you are new to the Corvette hobby, you'll find it interesting to know that there were two previous ZR1 Corvette configurations. The first is impossible to know from the outside. The second requires a keen eye for detail and knowing where to look for the badge. And the third is the most distinctive Corvette ever offered.

Grand Sport Tribute
I've always had a soft spot for the C2 Sting Ray Corvettes. Zora
Duntov's Grand Sport was the ultimate "could have been" Corvette.
What if GM hadn't pulled the plug on the Grand Sport and
decided to build enough cars to qualify the Grand Sport as an actual
"production" Corvette?
Hmmm... Yes...
Can you imagine a field of Grand Sports doing race track battle
with the Cobras? THAT would have been GREAT racing!

Each print measures 11" x 17", is printed on tan parchment paper, and signed by the artist.

Suggestions Anyone???
Since The Illustrated Corvette Series started in the Spring of '97, it has been telling the chronological history of the Corvette. Beginning this September, the series will be covering interesting famous racing Vettes, specialty Vettes, and some of the more obscure prototype and show Vettes, such as the '63 4-seater Sting Ray prototype and the 1954 Nomad.
This should be a lot of fun, as there's always a good story behind race cars, prototypes, and show cars.
So, if you have a suggestion for something that you'd like to see in the series, please e-mail me at:
lightoak@comcast.net. I'm open to all suggestions.

Well, that's a wrap for this month. I'm a few years past half a century and I've been into Corvetes since I was a 10-year old lad. I remember my Dad saying this about Corvettes, "They ain't never going to last. Why would you pay all that money for a Chevy with two seats?"
Sorry Dad, I love ya, but you missed that one.
Corvettes just keep getting better and better. And with a 55-year heritage of high-performance and bad-ass race cars, it couldn't be more interesting and fun.
Remember, drive safe, extract your 0-to-60-mph blasts carefully, and most of all, Save the Wave!
Scott
