The biggest racing story in Corvette history happened in 1999 with the announcement of the first, openly factory-backed Corvette racing team. Race car builders Pratt & Miller were contracted to build and co-develop the new C5-R Corvette. From 1957 to 1998, Corvette fans have lamented GM’s reluctance to put the factory behind a racing Corvette. Like any serious racing effort, it took some time to sort out the cars, but pay day happened in June 2001 at Le Mans with the biggest class win in Corvette history. The Pratt & Miller C5-R Corvettes went on to win Le Mans in ‘02 and ‘04. The factory-backed C5-R aside, the new C5 Corvettes were proving themselves to be potent competitors. With the all-new structure and suspension, an all-aluminum advanced fuel-injected small-block LS-1 engine, and lightweight transaxle, the C5 Corvette had massive potential that many Corvette teams exploited to the max.
