When the C4 Corvette came out in 1984 it didn’t take racers long to figure out that the new design was very solid and rigid – just right for racing. When Corvettes starting competing in the Showroom Stock series, it only took a few races to see that the new car was vastly superior to the old machine, and quickly dominated the series. The new C4 Corvette race cars were so strong that after 3 years, SCCA booted them out of Showroom Stock! The fast Vettes were relegated to the new “Corvettes-Only” Corvette Challenge Series. Story has it that Porsche bought several C4 Corvettes to take apart to find out why they were so fast. Then in ‘91, Tommy Morrison shattered old speed records with his ZR-1 speed demon Corvette. The EDS-sponsored ZR-1 blasted a 50-year old, 24-hour average speed record with a 175.885 MPH run! After taking the record, Morrison took a 2-lap victory run at FULL THROTTLE! The ZR-1 ran nearly flawlessly for 24 hours with only one repair.
