C4 Corvettes: 1984 to 1996

1989 Corvette Challenge Racer - Print #C4-2

As grim as things were in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, it would get that much better with the new C4, 1984 Corvette. It was a whole new car and there was a new attitude in Chevrolet. Corvette racers immediately picked up on the new C4 Corvette’s improved suspension and brakes. Very quickly, the new Corvette was dominating the SCCA Showroom Stock Series. After three years of total dominance and not losing a single race, the SCCA had had it with the Chevrolet wonder car. Corvettes were banned from Showroom Stock racing because they were simply too damn good!

Toronto promoter John Powel pitched a plan for an all-Corvette series called the Corvette Challenge. it was somewhat-like the IROC (International Race Of Champion) series in that every car was equally prepared in order to level the playing field and provide good, close racing. Chevrolet liked the idea and agreed to back and build 56 equally prepared Corvettes and make them available to wanna-be racers through their local Chevrolet dealer.

The series lasted 2 years, from 1988 to 1989 and offered some very exciting racing. Midway through the ‘89 season the other manufactures let the SCCA know that they were then ready to race the Corvettes, so the Corvette Challenge Series closed after the last ‘89 race.

Story has it that Porsche was so dismayed at the speed and handling of the Corvettes that they actually bought a few Corvettes so that they could take them apart to see why they were such good race cars. Sweet revenge considering the thrashing the Corvettes took through the ‘70 from Porsche and BMW.
