Duntov's 1974 ZL-1 IMSA Cafe Racer - Print #C3-3

Zora Arkus-Duntov sure knew how to have fun. In 1969 the Chief of Corvette Engineering took an L-88 Corvette and installed one of the new all-aluminum 427 ZL-1 engines. This gave Duntov a chance to see for himself exactly what a 550 horsepower, lightweight production-like racer would perform like. Car & Driver magazine included the car as part of a five car 1969 Corvette comparison test. The car was stripped down as if a racer had built the car for competition. Duntov installed the fender flairs, header side pipes, the L-88 hood, and removed the bumpers and anything else that a racer would discard.

Fast forward to 1975 and Duntov was at it again with the same car. The mule Corvette had been retrofitted the year before with the new ‘74 front and rear bumper covers. In ‘75 Duntov had the latest IMSA-inspired body pontoons added to the car. It was everything that a wanna-be Corvette racer could dream of in 1975.
