IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) racing was the hottest thing in road racing during the mid-to-late 70s. The toughest cars of the day were outfitted with outrageous body extensions, scoops, and wings. Some of the wildest cars of the day were the pontoon-flaired Corvettes. Some called them the Batmobile cars. John Greenwood made the look popular with his series of Corvette IMSA racers and many others followed the new trend in Corvette aerodynamic body design. Since there was little to no factory support, actual racing success was spotty and inconsistent. The Greenwood cars almost always set the track record and qualified first, but had a string of bad mechanical luck.
The new wild look spilled over into the street scene. Not since the Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird had there been such an over-the-top street machine.
