The 1963 Grand Sport Corvette was arguably the ultimate “could have been” Corvette. Zora Arkus-Duntov wanted to build a light weight Corvette to take on the Shelby Cobras. The original version of the Grand Sport didn’t look that much different from the new ‘63 production Corvette. But very quickly that car was given cool raced stuff such as fender flairs, an elaborate hood, headlight covers, rear fender scoops and a scoop for the rear axle cooler. Unfortunately, only 5 grand Sports were build before Duntov was spanked by GM brass, “WE DON’T BUILD RACE CARS! GET RID OF THEM!” So that’s exactly what he did.
